چکیده

Experimental studies on the irreversible growth of field-induced chains of dipolar particles suggest an asymptotic power-law behavior of several relevant quantities. We introduce a Monte Carlo model of chain growth that explicitly incorporates the anisotropic diffusion characteristic of a rodlike object. Assuming a simple power-law form for the mean cluster size S(t);t, the results of our model are in good agreement with the experimental measurements of the dynamic exponent z. Nevertheless, an alternative scenario, including logarithmic corrections to the standard power-law behavior, provides a better and more insightful interpretation of the anomalous dynamic exponent. In contrast to some experimental findings, we do not observe any dependence of the exponents on the volume fraction of particles f . Finite-size effects are also explored by simulating very long time evolutions or highly concentrated systems. Two different behaviors are found, namely, saturation and a crossover to a quasi-one-dimensional regime. @S1063-651X~99!08201-X#

Colloidal structures of asymmetric dimers via orientation-dependent interactions.

We apply an AC electric field to induce anisotropic interactions among asymmetric colloidal dimers. These anisotropic interactions, being shape-specific and orientation-dependent, can create complex and unique structures that are not possible for spherical particles or symmetric dimers. More specifically, we show a series of novel structures that closely resemble one- and two-dimensional antife...

Multidirectional colloidal assembly in concurrent electric and magnetic fields.

Dipolar interactions between nano- and micron sized colloids lead to their assembly into domains with well-defined local order. The particles with a single dipole induced by an external field assemble into linear chains and clusters. However, to achieve the formation of multidirectionally organized nano- or microassemblies with tunable physical characteristics, more sophisticated interaction to...

Understanding the oriented-attachment growth of nanocrystals from an energy point of view: a review.

Since Penn et al. first discovered the oriented attachment growth of crystals, the oriented attachment mechanism has now become a major research focus in the crystal field, and extensive efforts have been carried out over the past decade to systematically investigate the growth mechanism and the statistical kinetic models. However, most of the work mainly focuses on the experimental results on ...

Low-density ordered phase in brownian dipolar colloidal suspensions.

We study the low volume fraction and electric field phase behavior of a Brownian colloidal suspension. On the application of a uniform ac field, we find a novel phase where chains of particles aggregate to form a well defined cellular network, consisting of particle-free "voids" surrounded by a percolating network of particle-rich walls. This cellular structure is stable to very long times, ind...

Interaction between like-charged polyelectrolyte-colloid complexes in electrolyte solutions: a Monte Carlo simulation study in the Debye-Hückel approximation.

We study the effective interaction between differently charged polyelectrolyte-colloid complexes in electrolyte solutions via Monte Carlo simulations. These complexes are formed when short and flexible polyelectrolyte chains adsorb onto oppositely charged colloidal spheres, dispersed in an electrolyte solution. In our simulations the bending energy between adjacent monomers is small compared to...
